The Garda Síochána is the police service of the Republic
of Ireland. The name is pronounced "gar-duh shee-uh-kawn-uh"
and literally means Guardians of the Peace.
That Gardai, as they're referred to, can be found in
every city, large town, and main country villages. They
are mainly unarmed, carrying only a baton as a weapon.
Each garda has completed specialist training to enable
them to work with the public and to act effeciently
during times of crime or crisis.
Should you find yourself in an emergency
while in the Republic there is only one number to dial...
999
No matter where you are in the Republic
this number will reach emergency dispatch and help will
be sent to you immediately.
