What is the Garda Síochána?
The Garda Síochána is the police service of the Republic of Ireland. The name is pronounced "gar-duh shee-uh-kawn-uh" and literally means Guardians of the Peace.

That Gardai, as they're referred to, can be found in every city, large town, and main country villages. They are mainly unarmed, carrying only a baton as a weapon. Each garda has completed specialist training to enable them to work with the public and to act efficiently during times of crime or crisis.

What is the Police Service of Northern Ireland?
As a result of the agreement reached in Belfast on the 10th April 1998, the Independent Commission on Policing in Northern Ireland was established, thus doing away with the old Royal Ulster Constabulary (RUC). Now officers from the Republic are free to join the PSNI and work side by side with officers from the Ulster province to create a broader branch of service for the multicultural communities Northern Ireland.
