WESTPORT HOUSE
Westport, County Mayo

Westport House

Westport House was designed in 1732 by Richard Castle (who is also credited with Powerscourt) and completed by James Wyatt in 1778. This house stands on a former site of the an O'Malley castle. The imposing interior features a grand dual marble staircase and many elegant rooms. One of the featured rooms is the James Wyatt dining room which is hung with family portraits, Waterford chandeliers and 18th century Chinese hand painted wallpaper.

This house is still privately owned but to keep up with expenses of a house this size it has become a commercial venture. The cellers of this house have become a sort of indoor fun park and the lake offers boating in traditional or swan shaped padel boats. There is also a miniature railroad, childrens zoo and several shops.

Towards the entrance to the estate is a buffet style restuarant and a display of old travelers caravans.
