KNAPPOGUE CASTLE
Quin, County Clare

Knappogue Castle, view from garden

The Macnamara's were a powerful clan in the 15th century in this part of County Clare. In 1467 they erected Knappogue Castle.

With the exception of 10 year period during Cromwellian times, 1649-1658, Knappogue Castle remained in the hands of the Macnamara's until 1815.

During the War of Independence, 1916, the castle was used by revolutionary forces.

The castle is now, ironically, owned by Texans and has been restored meticulously to become one of Ireland's most charming castles. It's been fully furnished and now hosts nightly Medieval styled banquets in the tourist season that include storytelling in the old style and

live musical enterainment and traditional dancing. (contact us for banquet bookings)

Also on site, the walled garden has been restored and open to visitors.

The central tower is original but the rest is what's called "Neo-Gothic". The interior boasts fine examples of Elizabethan fireplaces and linenfold wood paneling.
