Kilkenny Castle, Kilkenny, Co Kilkenny
Kilkenny Castle was built in the 1190's and was occupied right up until 1935 by the powerful Butler family. Because of the enormous upkeep of the castle the Butler's decided to turn the castle over to the state in 1967 and is now open to the public for guided only tours.
Kilmacduagh Monastery, near Gort, Co Galway
Kilmacduagh's oldest buildings date back to the 11th century, but the site as a whole was founded in the 7th century by St. Colman Mac Duagh (Colman, son of Duagh).
King John's Castle, Limerick City, Co Limerick
King John's Castle was founded by King John in 1200AD not long after the Norman invasion (1171AD). This castle is an imposing site with its five drum towers and tall curtain walls. It's situated on the banks of the Shannon River.
Knappogue Castle, Quin, Co Clare
The Macnamara's were a powerful clan in the 15th century in this part of County Clare. In 1467 they erected Knappogue Castle and remained in their hands until 1815, except for a short 10 year period during Cromwellian times, around 1641-51.
Kylemore Abbey, Connemara, Co Glaway
Kylemore Abbey was built by Manchester textile tycoon Michael Henry in the 1860's and was a present to his beloved wife. They'd fallen in love with the area when on their honeymoon in 1850 and reportedly spent £155,000 to buy the land. They spent a further £250,000 to create a fantastical dream world.
