GOUGANE BARRA PARK &
ST FINBARR'S MONASTERY
Gougane Barra (near Ballingeary), County Cork

Gougane Barra Church, Gouganebarra Lake

On Holy Island, set in the middle of a lake where the River Lee originates in the hills of County Cork, St Finbarr founded a monastery. 25 September is St Finbarr's Day and celebrated the climax in Fibarr's pilgrimage to the island.

Visitors today can see the tiny stone cells that the monks lived in at the top of this tiny island. All of the cells are still in good condition, surrounding the inside of protective walls. Inside each cell is a single stone bench on which to

sleep and sit. And around the inside of the enclosure are the 12 stations of the cross. In the center is a cross with a memorial plaque.

The original cross was removed and relocated to the back of the enclosure over looking the lake. The cross is in a fairly bad state of repair so is only propped up against a tree (photo below left).

It's been a long standing tradition that visitors to this holy site imbed coins into this cross (photo right). When the cross was moved visitors continued to imbed coins into the cross, as well as the tree that the cross is leaning against.
