Basalt columns were created about 61 million
years ago during a series of volcanic eruptions.
Layers of solidified lava cooled rapidly,
in the process shrinking and cracking evenly
into these polygonal-shaped blocks, that average
12 inches across; most are hexagonal but others
have up to ten sides.
It was the end of the last ice age, when
the land was frozen, that the shore as we
see it today was formed.
There is an interpretive center here with
gift shop and cafe. A shuttle bus will take
passengers down to the site, which is at the
bottom of a very steep road.
