Clifden
Castle, Clifden, Connemara, Co Galway
Clifden Castle was built by John d'Arcy in a Gothic Revival
style in the 18th century, about 1750. The house was only
lived in for about 90 years before it was abandoned in
the 1840's.
Coole
Park, Gort, Co Galway
Coole House was more than just a Georgian era country
home to Lady Augusta Gregory. After the death of her beloved
husband, one Augusta mourned for the rest of her life,
the estate became the center for the Irish Literary Revival
in the early 20th century.
Kilmacduagh
Monastery, near Gort, Co Galway
Kilmacduagh's oldest buildings date back to the 11th century,
but the site as a whole was founded in the 7th century
by St. Colman Mac Duagh (Colman, son of Duagh).
Kylemore
Abbey, Connemara, Co Glaway
Kylemore Abbey was built by Manchester textile tycoon
Michael Henry in the 1860's and was a present to his beloved
wife. They'd fallen in love with the area when on their
honeymoon in 1850 and reportedly spent £155,000 to buy
the land. They spent a further £250,000 to create a fantastical
dream world.
Thoor
Ballylee (Yeats' Tower)
Thoor Ballylee began its life as a de Burgo (Burke) built
fortified tower on the banks of the Cloon River near the
market town of Gort. In 1902 the castle became part of
the nearby Coole Estate, home to Lady Augusta Gregory.
