CEIDI FIELDS
near Ballycastle, County Mayo

Ceide Fields Interpretive Centre

Ceidi Fields is Europe's larges Stone Age land enclosure. It covers over 4 square miles along the north coast of Mayo. This site was once enclosed with stone walls to create fields suitable for crops such as wheat and barley, and for grazing cattle.

Remains of farm buildings indicate that this was a large community. Bog growth has covered over most of the settlement in the last 5000 years, which has actually helped to preserve it.

At this site you will see part of the bog growth cut away and the settlement revealed.

A modern day path and guide will take you around the site. Recent excavations have uncovered a Stone Age pottery and a primitave plow that was used in the fields.

This interpertive center is unique to Ireland with its pyramid shape. There is a viewing platform at the top of the center where you can look out over the site. There's also an audio/visual center here and cafe.

The museum is an interesting inclusion. A large piece of bogwood was recovered on the site and now stands as the focal point at the center of the building, and there are displays on the site's geology and botony. You can see how Stone Age humans lived in some of the lifesize recreations (photo right)
