ARDGILLAN CASTLE
Balrothy, County Dublin

Ardgillan Castle, facing the Irish Sea

Ardgillan Castle was built in the 18th century in the Gothic Revival style that's associated with the more romantic style of castle. These types of castles were built by the gentry in peaceful times. Because they didn't require fortification, larger multi-paned windows could be installed to bring more light into the rooms, as well as multiple entrances into the house for guests and servants.

As a typical gentry owned house visitors will find some of the typical estate features. An awesome glass and timber green house (photo below left) is on the north end of the estate and is still in use.

Greenhouse

In front of the green house is a lush rose garden. Beside the greenhouse is a tea room (photo right )which is open in the summer months.

From the visitor car park one can walk down to the castle down over a large grassy slope that overlooks St Patrick's Island just off Skerries on the Irish Sea.

Tea Room

The house is open to visitors for a small fee. The grounds are open free of charge and are wonderful for an afternoon stroll. Disabled visitors can drive down to the castle and park in one of the handicapped reserved spaces.
