Ardgillan Castle,
facing the Irish Sea
|
Ardgillan Castle was built in the 18th century
in the Gothic Revival style that's associated
with the more romantic style of castle. These
types of castles were built by the gentry in
peaceful times. Because they didn't require
fortification, larger multi-paned windows could
be installed to bring more light into the rooms,
as well as multiple entrances into the house
for guests and servants.
As a typical gentry owned house visitors will
find some of the typical estate features. An
awesome glass and timber green house
(photo below left) is on the north end of the
estate and is still in use.
