Lisheen Castle dates back to 1827 when the lands were in the
possession of John Lloyd Esq. The castle had a number of owners,
and was eventually overseen by Captain Richard Cooper, who had
a number of estates around Ireland in which he acted as an absentee
landlord. Eventually the house came into the ownership of the
Everard family in 1994. By that time the once grand estate had
been divided a number of times and the castle had fallen into
ruin. The Everard's had lived in Fortfield House, the dower
house on the estate, since the mid-19th century so it was no
surprise that they were interested in the castle. A restoration
project began in 1996 and by the end of 1999 the work was completed.
The castle opened to the public in May 2000 to include seven
luxurious en-suite bedrooms and all modern amenities, including
central heating, phone, TV and internet connection. The castle
is a labor of love for the Everard's who spared nothing at making
sure every room in the house had the same level of opulence
as the next. From the entry hall, through the dining room, reception
rooms, games room and library, every room has been stunningly
decorated in period antiques which have brought the house's
historic grandeur back to life. The house has two kitchens.
One is fully fitted to the highest catering standard while the
other is decorated in a country style for informal cooking.
The original wine cellar has also been restored to exacting
standards.
The castle is part of a 300 acre working farm specializing
in growing cereals and raising dairy cows. And the gardens and
lawns have been brought back to former glory for guest enjoyment.
Lisheen Castle is available for rent on a self-catering basis,
either weekly or monthly, and for special events. Please enquire
with your needs.
