Foulksrath Castle dates back to the 15th century and was built
by the Purcell clan. For over three centuries, the Purcell's
ruled here until they were reduced to peasants after the castle
was confiscated by Oliver Cromwell in the mid-17th century.
After a time, the castle fell into disrepair and was slated
for demolition in 1946, a time before preservation orders were
placed on historical landmarks by the State. Fortunately, the
castle was saved through local support and was eventually bought
by a private citizen in 1948 who turned into a hostel for travelers.
In recent years, the castle has been restored and updated to
include modern luxuries, such as central heating, running water
and electricity, while retaining original architectural features,
such as spiral stairs, deep-set arrow slits and a secret passage
up to the battlements.
Today the castle is managed by An Óige, the Irish Youth Hostel
Association, and for anyone looking for an interesting inclusion
to their itinerary but preferring to stay in hostel accommodations,
Foulksrath Castle would fit the bill.
