Markree Castle is the ancestral seat of the Cooper family,
the tenth generation of which runs the castle as a hotel today.
The castle sits on 800 acres of unspoiled park and woodland,
attracting a number of woodland creatures, including fallow
deer, fox, badger and hare. A recent study has been conducted
on the estate to research the rare Daubenton's Bats and Irish
Red Squirrels. The River Unsin runs through the estate and is
said to be one of the cleanest rivers in all of Europe, and
is home to otters and kingfisher birds. A flock of Wensleydale
sheep add a touch of domesticity to this wildlife haven. The
house currently boasts the finest in Irish Victorian architecture
and furnishings. All bedrooms are en-suite and include flat
screen TV, phone, coffee/tea making facilities and duck down
duvets. The house offers an award-winning restaurant, afternoon
tea and guest lounge.
Markree Castle offers the very best in castle hotel accommodation
in the North West of Ireland.
